ADULT CLASSES

MONDAY –ADULTS

WIN12-01 Co-op Independent Ceramics with Facilitator Dallas Shoesmith
Students choosing this class must have taken a minimum of 3 Advanced Ceramics classes. Students must be able to work without an instructor and be willing to share studio tasks such as mixing glazes, clean up and firing of the kiln, etc. as assigned by the facilitator and do individual demonstrations during class for other students. Skills in construction and glazing methods, advanced knowledge in chemicals and glaze formulas, ability to load kilns, and knowledge in firing temperatures is necessary. Extra open studio time is available on Thursdays from 1-4 pm. $20 material fee includes 25 lbs of clay, firings and glazes.

WIN12-02 Advanced Ceramics with Dallas Shoesmith
(Prerequisite for Independent Ceramics)
Explore surface tensions and add natural organic touches to traditional pots and sculptures. Be willing to explore. Personal ideas will be reinforced. Glazing, use of chemicals and other processes will be demonstrated. You will have the opportunity to advance your creative skills by exploring a variety of mixed media with your clay creations. There will be a Raku workshop offered during the semester. Extra open studio time is available on Thursdays from 1-4 pm. $20 material fee includes 25 lbs of clay, firings and glazes.

TUESDAY- ADULTS

WIN12-03 Watercolor Landscapes with Susie Blyveis
Beginning, intermediate and advanced artists will learn to use watercolor expressively. Methods and techniques of painting winter reflections and the use of Pitt Pen in winter landscapes will be explored. Students will learn how to paint a winter scene by saving the white of the paper. Materials list available at registration.

WIN12-04 Beginning Fused Glass with Joe Takens (Prerequisite for Fused Glass 2)
Learn the fundamentals of fusing glass with basic techniques. This class will focus on flat work. Explore the different fusing processes and what can be achieved with them. Learn what you can do with tack fusing, full fusing and the combination of both techniques. This class uses mainly standard glass but will be experimenting with Di-Chroic glass as an embellishment for your standard glass pieces. Expect to make pieces that can be used as jewelry, sun catchers or wall hangings.

WIN12-05 Drawing with Bob Clouse
This class focuses on visual concepts and terminology that leads to realistic drawings. Methods used are vase/face, blind/contour, negative space, grid, portrait and gesture drawing. Bring a drawing pad at least 9” x 12”.

WIN12-22 Sculpture Basics with Bruce Wiegand (Session I)
This class will cover the principals and elements of 3-D design and look at examples around southwest Michigan. Students will complete 3 projects. The first will be a simple “found object” sculpture on cardboard. The second will be a human form using a wire armature and plaster tape. The third project will be a ¾ size realistic head of the student or a partner, made of clay.
Age: 16 +

WIN 12-23 Soapstone Carving with Bruce Wiegand (Session II)
This class will center around the basic methods of stone carving. Each student will get a 10 lb piece of soapstone from which you carve an abstract sculpture. The stone will be dressed and mapped in order to take advantage of its natural tendencies and then shaped using chisels, rasps and drills. After being “roughed” in it will be smoothed using several grades of sandpaper and buffed to a high shine with floor wax.

WIN12-21 Beginning Watercolor Painting with Dorothy Rollert
Learn to handle watercolors- How much water? How much paint? The first day of class bring a pad of drawing paper, pictures and pencil; supplies will be discussed.

WIN12-06 Beginning Ceramics with Betty Perkins
Explore pottery hand built techniques such as pinch, slab, and coil pots. You will complete at least 3 pieces. Students will learn basic glaze theory and application plus firing of clay projects.

WIN12-07 Painting with Craig Bishop and Sue Trowbridge
This class is designed for all skill levels and media. Painless critiques will take place each week followed by a voluntary potluck lunch. Bring your own supplies.

WIN12-08 Fused Glass 2 with Joe Takens
Fused Glass 1 is a prerequisite for this class. Take the knowledge gained from the Beginning Fused Glass class and apply it to making functional pieces. Learn how to use molds to make small bowls and trays combining the full fuse, tack fuse and slumping techniques. Learn how to make small vases using stainless molds. Make unique pieces using a drop ring. Class uses standard glass with some Di-Chroic glass as accents.

WIN12-09 Glass Blowing with Joe Takens
Experiment with the artistic applications and properties of hand blown and lamp worked glass creations completing multiple glass projects over the semester. Safety and skill development will be practiced using specialized surface mix torches that liquefy glass at 2000 degree temperatures. Borosilicate colored glass rod and tubing will be the medium for most projects.

WIN12-10 Puppets with Linda Holderbaum
Explore the world of puppets by seeing a wide variety of puppets and marionettes and creating your own. You will create your own shadow puppets, hand-puppet and a simple marionette plus put together ideas for puppet plays.

WIN12-11 Drawing with Tom Garland
Learn the basics of drawing shapes, perspective, using color and ideas to develop drawing skills. Bring pencils and a drawing pad; other materials will be explored such as markers, colored pencils and paint.

WIN12-12 Creative Play Group for 1 ½ to 2 ½ Year Olds and Adult with Mary Cornwell
The creative class for toddlers and parents includes art activities, movement and other sensory activities in a relaxing environment. Wear old clothes! Bring a t-shirt or pillowcase to first class to make a paint shirt.

WIN12-14 Exploring Chinese and African Art with Linda Holderbaum
Explore the arts from China and Africa in January and February in conjunction with the Center’s January and February exhibitions. Try your hand at the ancient arts of Chinese paper cutting and calligraphy as well as African masks and Mali Mud cloth. Folk tale stories from China and Africa will be related to each activity.
Age: 8-12 years

WIN12-15 Explore the Wild Still Life with Linda Holderbaum
Explore some exotic and unusual still life arrangements with a variety of drawing and painting options. Bring your own supplies—everyone will work at their own space. New still life arrangements will be used every one to two weeks. Try various techniques include contour drawing, negative space, and more.

WIN12-16 Painting Outstanding Evergreens in Acrylics with Elizabeth Crabtree
Evergreens are an important staple in many landscape scenes. In this workshop, students will learn tips and techniques for creating memorable stand-alone evergreens as well as grouped evergreens as supportive elements. This is an interactive workshop designed for beginners but all skill levels are welcome. Students will take with them painted examples and an Evergreen Tips & Techniques hand out.

Learn to create luscious leafy trees and beautiful branches and bushes in this workshop geared for the beginner in acrylic painting. Simple techniques to create amazing results will be demonstrated and explored by students who will take away at least one painting at the end of the class.

WIN12-18 Trees for the Seasons in Acrylics (Fall and Winter) with Elizabeth Crabtree
Designed for the beginner landscape painter, students will gain the experience and confidence needed to paint fantastic Fall and Winter trees in acrylics. Techniques for creating fall foliage, snowy branches and trunks, forest groups and focal trees for these two beautiful seasons will be demonstrated and explored by students. Though geared for beginners, all skill levels are welcome. Students will take with them painted examples and a Fall and Winter Trees Tips & Techniques hand out.

WIN12-19 Trees for the Seasons in Acrylics (Spring and Summer) with Elizabeth Crabtree
In this class for beginning landscape painters, students learn techniques for creating beautiful spring and summer trees. Instruction will include tips for creating depth, choosing the right colors and composing a lovely setting for your trees. Demo will be followed by painting session during each class. Though geared for beginners, all skill levels are welcome. Students will take with them painted examples and a Spring and Summer Trees Tips & Techniques hand out.

WIN12-20 Still Life in Acrylics with Elizabeth Crabtree
Students will discover the versatility of acrylics while creating a realistic still life painting on paper, employing painting techniques generally used in watercolor and oils. This class is geared for beginners but all skill levels are welcome. Students will paint each session and take away at least one finished still life painting by the end of the class.

REGISTRATION
To register call 269-962-9511 or register online with PayPal, stop in or mail registration with payment to the Art Center of Battle Creek, 265 E. Emmett St., Battle Creek, MI 49017.

Registration is on a first come first serve basis. Payment is due in full at the time of registration unless the class qualifies for a three-part payment plan. The first payment of the payment plan needs to be paid upon registration for the class with the additional payments made before the beginning of class. Registrations will be accepted until the second week of class if space is available. Classes that do not have a minimum of six (6) students one-week prior to the start of however, will be canceled.

PAYMENT- registration is accepted by mail, phone or in person. The instructor does NOT accept registrations in the classroom.

**A THREE-PART PAYMENT PLAN is available for classes with fees of $50 or more. Payments for this plan are accepted using personal checks only. The first payment must be made upon registration for the class and two post-dated checks included with the registration. It is understood that the Art Center will process the additional two payments even if the person decides not to complete the class. An agreement form for the three-pay plan will be given to the student at the time of registration that clearly marked when the other two payments will be processed. The payments will be processed before the start of class.

REFUNDS-Refunds will be given ONLY when a registrant withdraws from a class AT LEAST ONE WEEK PRIOR to the first class session. NO CASH REFUNDS WILL BE MADE. Refunds will be in the form of a check or through PayPal if that was the original method of payment. There are no refunds for missed class sessions. No refunds will be given after the first class session. A $10 service fee will be deducted from all refunds. Please all one month from the date of request to receive you refund.

CANCELLATIONS-The Center reserves the right to cancel any class when there is insufficient enrollment (minimum of six (6) students per class). Registrants will be notified and will receive a full refund. We will make every effort to reschedule a class when an instructor cancels but due to space and other classes we may be unable to reschedule.

INCLEMENT WEATHER- If the Center finds it necessary to close due to weather conditions, cancellation information will be found at 269-962-9511. Classes cancelled for inclement weather will be rescheduled whenever possible and every effort will be made to contact students by phone.

WAIT LISTS-When a class fills quickly, the Center will offer registrants the opportunity to be placed on a waiting list. Wait list students will be called when space becomes available or if there are enough students to offer another class section.
