The Arts CAN keep you healthy!

The latest research shows that: the arts can keep you healthy. Creative activities like painting, writing, pottery, drama, singing, and storytelling raise self-esteem, increase enthusiasm for life, and result in fewer doctor visits, says Gene D. Cohen, M.D., Ph.D., of George Washington University’s Center on Aging, Health and Humanities at the George Washington University Medical Center. Cohen's ongoing study at GWU's Center on Aging, Health and Humanities of approximately 300 men and women tracked several arts programs around the country. The arts participants, whose average age is 80, scheduled fewer doctor appointments and used fewer medications than members of the control group (who are not involved in the arts). They also have fewer incidents of depression, higher morale, and more involvement in outside activities. Be sure to include art as part of your health plan for living a fuller, healthier life!

MONDAY –ADULTS

sp15-01 CO-op INDEPENDENT CERAMICS with Facilitator Dallas Shoesmith       
Students choosing this class must have taken a minimum of 3 Advanced Ceramics classes. Students must be able to work without an instructor and be willing to share studio tasks such as mixing glazes, clean up and firing of the kiln, etc. as assigned by the facilitator and do individual demonstrations during class for other students.  Skills in construction and glazing methods, advanced knowledge in chemicals and glaze formulas, the ability to load kilns and knowledge in firing temperatures is necessary.
Extra open studio time is available on Thursdays from 1-4 pm.
$20 material fee includes 25 lbs of clay, firings and glazes.
Class limit-10 students
9 wks-Mon.  April 20th –June 22  1-4 pm (27 hrs)

SP15-02 ADVANCED Ceramics with Dallas Shoesmith
(Prerequisite for Independent Ceramics) 
Explore surface tensions and add natural organic touches to traditional pots and sculptures. Be willing to explore. Personal ideas will be reinforced.  Glazing, use of chemicals and other processes will be demonstrated.  You will have the opportunity to advance your creative skills by exploring a variety of mixed media with your clay creations. Students will have a fun time creating with Michigan slip if they are interested. There will be a Raku workshop offered during the semester.
Extra open studio time is available on Thursdays from 1-4 pm.

TUESDAY-ADULTS

SP15-09BASIC WATERCOLOR WASH TECHNIQUES AND EFFECTS WITH SUSIE BLYVEIS
Add new techniques to your water color skills. Learn watercolor monoprinting and painting a sunset using wet in wet techniques                                                                            Class limit-9 students

SP15-13 Drawing What You See (not what you know) WITH BILL LAMACHIA
Drawing more accurately is the basis of improving in all other media. You will unlearn the "how to" methods that are holding you back and learn how to trust your eyes.                                       Class limit-9 students

SP15-03 bEGINNING Glass Torch Work With Adam Walter
This is a beginner’s class.  Learn how to use a torch to turn glass into art. You will learn how to work with Borosilicate (Pyrex) clear glass tube, rods and colored glass rods. This type of glass, as opposed to "soft glass", allows you to sculpt medium to large pieces. Borosilicate glass is not as sensitive to cracking or breaking while working larger pieces on a torch. This is a beginners class.                 Class limit-5 students

WEDNESDAY-ADULTS

SP15-04 Beginning Ceramics with Ruth de Saint Leger
This class is an introduction to the basics of working with clay.  Students will explore coil, pinch and slab building techniques to create bowls, vases, mugs and tiles. Basic glaze theory and firing will also be covered. 
$20 material fee includes 25 lbs of clay, firings and glazes.                            Class limit-10 students

SP15-14 Beginner & Intermediate Watercolor WITH BILL LAMACHIA
This class is for those who are new to watercolor as well as those with some experience. In this class students will learn basic techniques and composition in watercolor with an emphasis on using photographs as reference. Prerequisite - basic drawing skills                                                                       Class limit-10 students

SP15-05 Painting with Craig Bishop and Sue Trowbridge
This class is designed for all skill levels and media.  Painless critiques will take place each week followed by a voluntary potluck lunch.  Bring your own supplies.

SP15-06 OPEN STUDIO TIME
Open to Art Center members enrolled in a class—open studio time is available from 1 -4 pm in the painting and ceramic studios. It is free to AC members if enrolled in a class and  $5 per session for Art Center members not enrolled in a class.

sp15-07 ADVANCED Glass Torch Work With Adam Walter
This class is for students who have glass torch work experience. In this class the focus will be placed on creating hollow forms through glass blowing. It will also focus on better understanding of flame and color control. Prerequisite: Beginning Torch Work 1 
Class limit-5 students
9 wks- Thurs. April 23rd –June 25th 6:30PM - 9:00PM (22.5 hrs)        $125 members/$150 nonmembers

SP15-08 Intermediate Ceramics with Nicole Kamidoi
Students in this class will be able to explore more advanced hand building techniques and can begin learning the basics of throwing on the wheel.  Different decoration techniques will be explored and encouraged.  Class and material fees include the costs of clay, glaze and firing.  Pre-requisite: Beginning Ceramics
$20 material fee includes 25 lbs of clay, firings and glazes.

Youth Classes

Classes are designed to be taken more than once to allow students to build upon their skills.  Teachers can work with beginner, intermediate and advanced students.

SATURDAY-YOUTH
SP15-10 DRAWING WITH TOM GARLAND (students & parents)
Learn how to draw 3-D through a variety of methods.  Bring a drawing pad and pencils, other materials that will be explored include markers, paint and colored pencils.  Parents are also encouraged to come and work alongside their children for a $10 fee! A $5 discount for each additional child from the same household applies to this class. Class limit-10 students Age: 6+ 
8 wks-Sat. April 25th-June 20th,, 11 am to 12:30 pm (12 hrs)  $ 50 members/$65 nonmembers   $ 10 for parent (each)

SP15-11 2-D AND 3-D ART WITH AL HARRIS
This Class will focus on drawing, painting and a few 3-D projects will be created.  The students will be using a variety of media to express themselves.  They'll also learn to control each medium with more confidence.
Class limit-10 students Ages: 4th-6th grade
8 wks-Sat. April 25th-June 20th, 1-2:30 pm  (12 hrs)  $ 50 members/$65 nonmembers   $ 10 for parent (each)

SP13-12 BEGINNING CERAMICS FOR CHILDREN WITH NICOLE KAMIDOI
In this class children will explore the basic principles of working with clay.  They will learn to make pinch pots, coil pots, slab tiles, slab bowls and basic glaze application.    Class Limit:  10 students Ages 6-10
6 wks- Sat. April 25th-June 1st, 11 am to 12:30 pm(12 hours)    $50 members/$65 nonmembers

Private Events

Plan your next teambuilding or recreation event with us. This is a wonderful opportunity for your team to work together in a relaxed, studio atmosphere with an experienced artist/instructor on either individual art pieces or a group work of art.

Workshops are available in both 2-D and 3-D Departments.

REGISTRATION POLICIES & PROCEDURES

REGISTRATION- There are many convenient to register:

The instructor does NOT accept registrations in the classroom. Students registering on line through should contact the Art Center before registering to be sure the class they intend to take is running.
Registration is on a first come first serve basis.  Payment is due in full at the time of registration.  Registrations will be accepted until the second week of class if space is available.  Classes that do not have a minimum of six (6) students one-week prior to the start of class, however, will be canceled.

REFUNDS-Refunds will be given ONLY when a registrant withdraws from a class AT LEAST ONE WEEK PRIOR to the first class session. NO CASH REFUNDS WILL BE MADE. Refunds will be in the form of a check or through PayPal if that was the original method of payment.  There are no refunds for missed class sessions.  No refunds will be given after the first class session.  A $10 service fee will be deducted from all refunds.  Please allow one month from the date of request to receive you refund.

CANCELLATIONS-The Center reserves the right to cancel any class when there is insufficient enrollment (minimum of six (6) students per class).  Registrants will be notified.  Registration pays are not processed until we have the minimum number of students required.   We will make every effort to reschedule a class when an instructor cancels but due to space and other classes we may be unable to reschedule.

 INCLEMENT WEATHER- If the Center finds it necessary to close due to weather conditions, cancellation information will be found at 269-962-9511. Classes cancelled for inclement weather will be rescheduled whenever possible and every effort will be made to contact students by phone.

WAIT LISTS-When a class fills quickly, the Center will offer registrants the opportunity to be placed on a waiting list.  Wait list students will be called when space becomes available or if there are enough students to offer another class section.
