June Art Play is a special occasion featuring Hex Signs. With a wonderful exhibit of all things Barns this is the perfect time to join us and create your personalized Hex Sign
Hex signs are a form of the Pennsylvania Dutch folk art. Barn paintings in the
form of circles began to appear in the early 19 th century and became more popular
when ready-mixed paint became available. By the 1950’s hex signs were
There are two schools of thought about hex signs: one is of talismanic nature and
the other is purely decorative. Both have been known to have superstitions
associated with certain themes.
Symbols such as: stars, roses, birds, hearts, tulips and the tree of life were often
used. Along with symbols, color plays an important part in defining the meaning
of a hex sign. The following is a list of colors and their meanings:
Black – protection
Blue – peace, calmness, spiritual
Brown – friendship, strength, mother earth
Green – growth, fertility, success, ideas to grow
Orange – abundance in career, abundance in projects
Red – emotions, passion, charisma
Violent – things that are sacred, creativity
White – purity, flow of energy
Yellow – health in body and mind, love of mankind

You need to bring your own food and drink if you choose to. These sessions are on the third
Wednesday of each month—the topic of the painting will be determined before each session. These
sessions are “mini” fund raisers for the Art Center and the proceeds go to Art Center operations.
